Anya traced the rim of her teacup, the ceramic cool beneath her fingertips as she sought a measure of calm. The cafe buzzed around them, a familiar symphony of clinking silverware and hushed conversations, yet her focus was entirely inward, wrestling with a bewildering new presence in her life. Liam. The name itself felt weighted, resonating with a quiet intensity that both intrigued and unsettled her.

“He’s… different, isn’t he?” Anya finally ventured, her voice barely a whisper against the cafe’s murmur. She looked across the small table at Chloe, her oldest and most trusted friend, hoping for some clarity, some anchor in the swirling currents of her own thoughts.

Chloe, ever the keen observer, had been watching Anya with a gentle, knowing smile playing on her lips. She’d seen the subtle shifts in Anya, the way her gaze would drift, a faint blush dusting her cheeks when Liam’s name was even obliquely mentioned. Chloe’s own interactions with Liam had been brief, punctuated by his almost unnerving stillness and the possessive flicker in his eyes when Anya was near, a depth of feeling that went beyond mere acquaintance.
