The alley air hung thick and heavy, a cloying mix of damp concrete and the metallic tang of something unpleasant. Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Marcus’s sneer was a grotesque mask in the dim, flickering light of a distant streetlamp. He’d cornered her, his words slithering like venom, a chilling echo of threats whispered in the periphery of her life for weeks. She’d tried to brush them off, to dismiss them as the ramblings of a desperate man, but now, here, the desperation felt like a tangible force, pressing in on her.
"You think you're so special," Marcus spat, his voice raspy. "Running around with fancy boys. They don't know what you're worth."
Anya swallowed, her throat dry. She clutched her bag tighter, her knuckles white. "I don't know what you're talking about, Marcus."
