The air in Elara’s tiny kitchen hung thick with the scent of burnt sugar and desperation. Flour dusted every surface, a fine white snow mirroring the chill that had settled deep in her bones. The eviction notice, stark and impersonal, lay on the counter like a death sentence. She traced the bold, unforgiving letters with a trembling finger, each word a hammer blow against the fragile scaffolding of her dreams. Failure. It was a taste she knew too well, a bitter undercurrent beneath the sweetness she poured into every croissant, every delicate macaron. The weight of her family’s hopes, their unwavering belief in her, felt like a physical burden, pressing down until she could barely breathe.

Just yesterday, Mrs. Gable had stopped by, her smile like sunshine breaking through a cloudy sky. “Don't you worry, dear,” she’d said, her voice raspy but kind, as she savored a slice of Elara’s signature lemon lavender cake. “This place has good bones. And so do you.” But good bones, Elara knew, wouldn't pay the rent.

A sharp rap on the door startled her, sending a cascade of sugar crystals skittering across the counter. She smoothed her apron, a futile attempt to erase the turmoil etched on her face, and opened the door to find Liam, standing there with a familiar, almost hesitant, expression. He held a rolled-up blueprint under one arm, a stark contrast to the delicate piping bag she’d been clutching moments before.
