The scent of old paper and brewing coffee was a balm, a familiar comfort that settled deep into my bones. It was a Saturday morning, the kind that used to feel like an eternity stretching out before me, brimming with possibilities. Now, it was a fragile gift, each hour earned, each moment savored. Melissa was humming softly in the kitchen, the clatter of mugs a gentle rhythm against the quiet hum of the refrigerator. It wasn’t the frantic energy of a few months ago, the gnawing anxiety that had coiled in my gut like a viper. It was a peace, tentative but real, like the first hesitant rays of sun after a long storm.

I sat at the small, worn kitchen table, tracing the grain of the wood with my finger. The sunlight, streaming through the window, illuminated dust motes dancing in the air, each one a tiny testament to the passage of time, to the life that continued to unfold, day by day. Melissa emerged, a steaming mug in each hand, her smile soft, her eyes, those same deep pools that had captivated me since we were knee-high, crinkling at the corners.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” she said, placing a mug in front of me. The aroma of dark roast, her favorite, filled the air.
