The air in my small apartment, usually thick with the stale scent of regret and stale smoke, felt different that morning. It was lighter, almost hopeful, a subtle shift that had nothing to do with the weak sunlight filtering through the grimy window. It was Melissa. Her words from the night before, a gentle but firm tide against the rocks of my self-destruction, replayed in my mind. “I’m not going anywhere, John. Not if you don’t want me to. But I can’t watch you drown.” Drown. The word hung heavy, a stark reminder of the abyss I’d been teetering on the edge of.

I looked at my hands, calloused from years of work, but also trembling. Trembling not from withdrawal this time, but from a burgeoning resolve. It was a fragile thing, this resolve, like a seedling pushing through concrete, but it was there. The urge was there, a familiar phantom limb that throbbed with a desperate need. It whispered promises of oblivion, of escape, of a temporary peace. But this time, another voice, softer but insistent, countered it. Melissa’s voice. Her eyes, clear and steady, had held no judgment, only a profound sorrow and an unwavering love. That love was a shield, a beacon, and for the first time in a long time, I felt a flicker of desire to protect it, to be worthy of it.
