The old oak tree stood sentinel, its branches reaching towards a sky painted in hues of lavender and rose. It was here, beneath its familiar shade, that Melissa and I had carved our initials, a clumsy, childish declaration of an everlasting bond. Now, years later, the bark had thickened around our joined letters, a testament to the passage of time and the enduring strength of what we’d started. We sat on the worn wooden swing, its chains groaning a familiar lullaby as we swayed gently, the soft evening breeze carrying the scent of pine and damp earth.

“Remember this place?” I asked, my voice a little rough with emotion. My gaze drifted from the tree to Melissa, her profile illuminated by the dying sunlight. Her hair, the color of spun honey, caught the light, and for a moment, I saw the little girl who’d once shared secrets and scraped knees with me right here.

She smiled, a slow, radiant thing that always managed to steal my breath. “How could I forget? This was our kingdom, John. Our secret world.” She ran a finger over the rough carvings. “We were so sure, weren’t we? So certain that nothing could ever change.”
