Chapter 16
Building a Nest
They begin to build a life together, finding a shared home. It’s a space filled not with grand gestures, but with the quiet comfort of everyday love.
The old farmhouse kitchen was bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon. Dust motes danced in the sunbeams, turning the air into a shimmering spectacle. It was a far cry from the sterile, impersonal apartments I’d lived in before, each one a temporary stop on a road that always seemed to lead back to the same dark places. This kitchen, though, felt different. It felt like a beginning. Melissa was humming, a low, contented sound, as she wiped down the worn Formica countertop. The chipped ceramic mug on the windowsill, filled with a wilting daisy, was a testament to her gentle touch, her ability to find beauty in the imperfect.

I leaned against the doorframe, a mug of lukewarm tea in my hands, and watched her. My gaze traced the curve of her cheek, the way her brow furrowed slightly in concentration, the easy grace of her movements. It had been months since we’d moved in, months since I’d truly started to feel like I belonged anywhere, like I was truly *here*. The addiction had been a relentless tide, pulling me under, but Melissa… she was my shore. She was the unwavering beacon that had guided me back, time and time again.
