The late afternoon sun, a gentle wash of honey across the park, found Melissa and me sharing a bench, the same bench where we’d carved our initials – a clumsy ‘J+M’ – nearly two decades ago. The air hummed with the quiet murmur of distant traffic and the chirping of sparrows, a familiar symphony that had underscored so many of our shared moments. Melissa’s hand rested on my thigh, a comforting weight, her presence a steady anchor in the often-turbulent sea of my existence. We spoke little, comfortable in the shared silence, our shoulders brushing, our gazes drifting over the familiar landscape of our childhood. His skepticism had been a constant, a low hum beneath the surface of our interactions, and I’d respected it. He was pragmatic, and my life hadn't always been a testament to pragmatism.

“Mind if I join you?” His voice was a little gruff, but his eyes, when they met mine, held a flicker of something I hadn’t seen before – a hesitant curiosity, perhaps even a grudging respect.
