The air in the small cafe buzzed with a low hum of conversation, the clinking of ceramic mugs, and the comforting aroma of roasted beans. Outside, the city bustled, a vibrant tapestry of life unfolding under a benevolent sun. But for me, for us, this little corner booth felt like our own private sanctuary. Melissa’s hand rested on mine across the worn wooden table, her touch a silent anchor in the swirling currents of my life. A week. A full week had passed since I’d truly committed, since I’d finally, irrevocably, chosen sobriety.
“You’re quiet today,” Melissa’s voice, a gentle melody, pulled me from my thoughts. Her eyes, the color of warm honey, searched mine, a familiar blend of concern and unwavering affection.
I offered a small smile, squeezing her hand. “Just… thinking. About how far we’ve come.” It felt like an understatement, a fragile whisper against the roar of the battle I was still fighting. But with her beside me, the roar seemed less daunting.
