The rain had stopped, leaving the world washed clean and smelling of damp earth and hopeful things. Melissa stood before me, her eyes, those deep pools I’d known since we were knee-high to a grasshopper, reflecting the soft, newfound glow of streetlights. My heart, a frantic bird caught in my chest, finally began to settle. The confession, the raw vulnerability I’d laid bare beneath the downpour, had hung in the air between us, thick with unspoken years. And now, her answer.
“Yes, John,” she whispered, her voice a melody that smoothed the rough edges of my soul. “Yes, I love you too.”
The words were simple, yet they carried the weight of a thousand sunrises, the promise of a future I had only dared to dream of in my darkest, most lucid moments. Tears, not of sorrow or despair this time, but of overwhelming, joyous relief, welled in my eyes. I reached out, my hand trembling, and gently cupped her cheek. Her skin was cool from the rain, soft beneath my touch.
