The sky had been a bruised purple all afternoon, a heavy, brooding presence that promised a storm. I’d tried to ignore it, tried to focus on the quiet hum of the coffee shop, the comforting scent of roasted beans, the way Melissa’s hand, warm and familiar, rested on mine across the small table. We were talking about nothing, really, the mundane details of our days, but even in the ordinary, there was an extraordinary grace to her presence. Her laughter, a melodic chime, was the soundtrack to my life, a melody I’d craved for so long.

Then the first fat drops splattered against the window, dark circles blooming on the dusty glass. Within minutes, the world outside dissolved into a furious curtain of water. The wind howled, rattling the old panes, and the coffee shop, usually a haven of warmth, felt suddenly vulnerable. Melissa squeezed my hand, her eyes wide. “Looks like we’re trapped for a bit.”

I nodded, a knot tightening in my chest. Trapped. The word echoed in my mind, a chilling reminder of how often I’d felt trapped, not by circumstances, but by myself. By the insidious grip of the craving, the gnawing need that had threatened to consume everything good in my life. And Melissa, bless her steadfast heart, had stood firm, a lighthouse in my personal tempest.
