The air in Melissa’s apartment was thick with the comforting scent of simmering tomato sauce and the quiet hum of the refrigerator. It was a simple scene, really. Just two people sharing a meal. But for me, it felt like the most profound moment of my life. Every forkful of pasta, every shared glance across the small dining table, was a testament to a fragile, burgeoning hope. The harsh glare of the past few months had begun to recede, replaced by the soft glow of Melissa’s presence, a light I’d almost extinguished.
I watched her as she spoke, her eyes sparkling in the lamplight, a gentle smile playing on her lips. She was recounting a funny anecdote about her cat, a creature I’d only ever seen in pictures, and I found myself hanging on her every word. It wasn't just the story; it was the sound of her voice, the way her brow furrowed slightly when she was concentrating, the easy rhythm of her laughter.
