The chipped paint of the old park bench felt familiar beneath my fingertips, a comforting texture against the gnawing anxiety in my gut. It was our bench, Melissa’s and mine, the one where we’d spent countless afternoons dissecting the universe with the boundless optimism of ten-year-olds, then later, with the clumsy sincerity of teenagers discovering the complicated landscape of attraction. Today, though, the air felt heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that had nothing to do with summer heat and everything to do with the shadow that had crept back into my life.

Mark sat beside me, his presence a solid, grounding force. He didn’t need to say anything, his quiet observation a testament to our years of friendship. He’d seen me at my worst, and he was here now, not to judge, but to offer something far more valuable: a clear-eyed perspective.

“She’s worried, John,” he said, his voice low and even, breaking the silence. He didn’t have to specify who ‘she’ was. Melissa’s worry was a palpable thing, a constant hum beneath the surface of our interactions lately.
