The air in this place was thick, a cloying, humid blanket that clung to Destiny’s skin like a second, unwelcome layer. It smelled of damp earth and something metallic, like old blood. Each breath was a conscious effort, a deliberate inhalation of the oppressive atmosphere. She’d been walking for what felt like hours, though time here was as fluid and unreliable as a half-forgotten dream. The landscape, a twisted mockery of the kingdom from her nightmares, stretched out before her – skeletal trees clawed at a bruised, perpetually twilight sky, and the ground was a treacherous carpet of decaying leaves and gnarled roots.

Then she saw him.

He stood on a rise, silhouetted against the sickly glow of the horizon. The Shadow Figure. He was exactly as she’d seen him countless times in her dreams, yet infinitely more real, more terrifying. A tall, impossibly slender form draped in what appeared to be shifting darkness, a cloak woven from the very absence of light. His face was obscured, a void where features should be, yet she felt his gaze, a palpable weight pressing down on her, dissecting her, cataloging her. It was a gaze that promised an ancient, unyielding malice.
