The air in this place tasted like old pennies and forgotten promises. Destiny pulled her threadbare cardigan tighter, the rough wool a small comfort against the gnawing unease that had settled deep in her bones. Every step she took on the cracked cobblestones was a hesitant echo of a thousand previous stumbles in the dark. This world, a tapestry woven from the threads of her own deepest anxieties, was both alien and achingly familiar.

The city loomed before her, a skeletal silhouette against a sky bruised with perpetual twilight. Towers twisted like arthritic fingers towards the heavens, their windows dark, empty sockets. A fine, gritty dust coated everything, muffling sound and dulling the already muted hues of a world that seemed to have forgotten color. It was the city from her dreams, the one that had haunted her sleep for years. The architecture was a perfect, terrible replica, from the jagged spires that clawed at the sky to the shadowed alcoves where something unseen always seemed to watch.

A gust of wind, cold and carrying the faint scent of decay, snaked through the deserted street. It whispered past her ears, not with words, but with a low, mournful hum that vibrated in her teeth. She remembered that sound, too. It was the prelude to the encroaching darkness in her nightmares, the prelude to the feeling of being utterly, irrevocably alone.
