The Shadow Figure's influence grows stronger, its attempts to cross over more direct. Destiny must face the entity embodying collective dread.
The air in the abandoned ballroom was thick with a silence that pressed in on Destiny, heavy and suffocating. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that managed to pierce the grimy, arched windows, illuminating the decay of what was once a place of grand celebration. Now, it was a tomb of forgotten revelries, and somewhere within its echoing emptiness, the Shadow Figure’s influence pulsed like a dying heart.
Destiny gripped the hilt of the dream-forged dagger, its cool, familiar weight a small comfort against the gnawing unease that had settled deep in her bones. The Keeper had warned her. The barrier between worlds was thinning, fraying at the edges like an old tapestry. And the Shadow Figure, that ancient, malevolent entity, was pushing, testing, seeking any weakness. This ballroom, a place she’d only seen in the fragmented, terrifying tapestry of her nightmares, felt like a nexus, a point where the veil was thinnest.
A low hum vibrated through the floorboards, a discordant thrum that seemed to resonate in her very marrow. It was the sound of fear, amplified, coalesced. The Keeper had called it the ‘Core of Dread,’ the purest distillation of the collective anxieties that fed this realm. And the Shadow Figure, she suspected, was drawing power from it, using it as a conduit.
