The air in the cavern tasted of dust and forgotten tears. It clung to Destiny’s tongue, a gritty residue of ages. She ran a hand over the rough-hewn stone walls, each fissure a silent testament to time’s relentless gnawing. The Keeper of Lost Dreams had led her here, to a place that felt both ancient and achingly familiar, a repository of echoes where the world’s deepest fears were etched into the very fabric of existence.
“This is where the first nightmares were born,” the Keeper’s voice, a low murmur like wind through dry leaves, resonated in the gloom. Their form shifted, a kaleidoscope of subtle hues, never quite settling on a single shape. “Before they were shadows, before they were terrors that clawed at the edges of sleep, they were whispers. Fragments of doubt, slivers of regret, the primal sting of loss. They coalesced here, in the heart of the nascent world, seeking form.”
Destiny traced a symbol carved into the wall, a spiral that seemed to writhe under her touch. It pulsed with a faint, cold light, mirroring the one etched into the obsidian shard the Keeper had given her. “The Shadow Figure… is it one of these first whispers?”
