Chapter 7
The Unforeseen Calamity
Disaster strikes – a flash flood, a harsh blizzard, or perhaps a brutal conflict. Their fragile settlement is devastated, threatening to shatter their hopes and dreams.
The sky, which had been a brilliant, unblemished blue for days, began to bruise with an unsettling gray. It was a power that could nurture and sustain, but also, in an instant, destroy. She hurried outside, her movements swift and efficient. The chickens squawked indignantly as she ushered them into their small enclosure, their usual clucking replaced by a nervous cacophony. She secured the latch on the woodpile, tied down the spare tarp that covered their precious stores of dried beans, and hurried back into the cabin, her eyes scanning the horizon.
