The chill in the mountain air seemed to carry a different kind of weight now. It was no longer just the bite of winter or the dampness of an approaching storm, but a palpable sense of unease that had settled over Samaria. The legend of the Big Foot, once a curious tale swapped around campfires, had taken on a new urgency. Children were kept closer to home, their laughter a little more subdued, and the men, even the most hardened of them, found themselves glancing towards the dense, shadowed woods with a flicker of apprehension.

Jedediah, his hair now streaked with silver, felt the shift keenly. He’d faced down floods, blizzards, and Silas Croft’s greed, but this… this was different. She saw it in the way he meticulously checked the locks on their cabin door each night, in the extra vigilance he showed when tending their livestock. She remembered the whispers of the land’s spirits, the old tales Agnes had shared, tales of guardians and ancient beings that watched over the wild places.
