Chapter 14
Confronting the Shadow
Jedediah, bolstered by Eliza and the community's resolve, confronts Silas Croft. The clash is not just over land, but over the very principles of their settlement.

He had appeared months ago, a solitary figure with eyes that missed nothing and a smile that promised nothing good. He claimed a prior right to the land, a vague assertion that Jedediah had dismissed as the bluster of a man accustomed to taking what he wanted. But Silas’s persistence, his subtle acts of sabotage – a strayed herd, a dammed-up stream – had chipped away at their security.
