A Treasure Revealed
With bated breath, they lift the stone. There, nestled safely, lies the wooden beaded necklace, its smooth surface holding the warmth of generations.
The air in Elara’s backyard was thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint perfume of roses that had seen better days. Leo, his knees already smudged with dirt from an earlier excavation near the compost bin, bounced on the balls of his feet. Maya, ever the pragmatist, smoothed down her shorts, a faint frown creasing her brow. Elara, however, was practically vibrating with anticipation, her eyes, usually twinkling with mischief, now wide and luminous. “Are you sure, Granny? Absolutely, positively sure?” Leo asked, his voice a hushed whisper that somehow managed to sound like a tiny trumpet.
Elara clasped her hands together, her knuckles like gnarled roots. “Sure as the sun rises and sets, my little sprout. The old oak remembers. And the oak, bless its leafy soul, never lies.” She gestured with a dramatic flourish towards the ancient oak tree that dominated the far corner of the garden, its branches reaching towards the sky like arthritic fingers. It was under this venerable sentinel, according to Elara’s latest, most fervent pronouncements, that the lost necklace lay hidden.
Maya sighed, a puff of air that barely disturbed the quiet. “Granny, we’ve looked everywhere else. Under the rose bushes, behind the garden gnome with the chipped hat, even in the birdbath.” She shuddered slightly, remembering the slimy, mossy bottom. “Are you sure this isn't just another one of your… imaginative recollections?”
