The air in the lecture hall, usually thick with the scent of old paper and stale coffee, felt charged with something else entirely today. It was a prickling awareness, a subtle shift in the atmosphere that I’d come to associate with him. Liam Blackwood. Even his name, whispered on the wind or scrawled in the margins of textbooks, seemed to carry a dark, magnetic pull. I tried to shrink into myself, pulling the collar of my worn cardigan tighter, as if that could somehow render me invisible. The two years I’d spent away, meticulously crafting the persona of Hallie Ford, a girl who simply wanted a quiet life, felt like a fragile dam holding back a raging river. And Liam, with his sharp eyes and sharper smile, was the crack in that dam.

He was in the row behind me, I could feel it. The way the other students unconsciously shifted, creating a wider berth around his section of the room. It wasn’t just his reputation, though that was certainly a heavy cloak. It was something more primal, a presence that commanded attention, whether you wanted to give it or not. I focused on Professor Albright’s droning voice, trying to anchor myself to the mundane, to the chemical equations that were supposed to be my world. But a stray glance from Tiffany Moore, sitting two seats to my left, shattered my concentration. Her eyes, hard and glittering like chips of obsidian, were fixed on me, a silent accusation in their depths. She knew. Or at least, she suspected. She saw the way Liam’s gaze sometimes flickered in my direction, the way he seemed to exist in my periphery, and her jealousy, a venomous serpent, coiled tighter with each passing day.

“You’re shaking,” a soft voice whispered beside me. Lexi. My anchor in this storm. She nudged my arm gently, her expression a mixture of concern and quiet strength. “Deep breaths, Hallie. It’s just another lecture.”
