The air in the grand ballroom of the Blackwood estate felt thick, heavy with the scent of expensive perfume and the unspoken tension that always simmered beneath the surface of such gatherings. Tonight, however, the air crackled with an energy I hadn't anticipated, a wild, untamed force that pulled at my very core. I clutched my champagne flute, the cool glass a stark contrast to the heat blooming in my chest. It had been a quiet evening, a carefully orchestrated charade of polite conversation and forced smiles, until he had walked in.

And now, he was here, a walking, breathing reminder of the world I had fled, the world that was slowly, inexorably, beginning to reclaim me.
