Despite the animosity, a moment of genuine trust forms between Hallie and Liam. They find solace in each other's company, a fragile peace amidst the brewing storm.
The cafeteria buzzed with the usual midday chaos, a symphony of clattering trays and boisterous laughter. I found my usual corner booth, Lexi sliding in opposite me, her eyes wide with the latest campus gossip. “You won’t believe what Tiffany was spewing about you yesterday, Hallie. Something about you having a secret admirer who’s ‘way out of your league.’ She practically spat the words.”
I forced a smile, stirring my lukewarm coffee. “Let her talk, Lexi. It’s just her way of getting attention.” But the knot in my stomach tightened. Tiffany’s venom, always so pointed, felt like it was aimed at something more than just my perceived ordinariness. It was a constant reminder of Liam’s presence, of the way his eyes, those unsettlingly perceptive grey eyes, sometimes lingered on me.
“Still,” Lexi continued, “it’s not fair. You’re the sweetest person, and she’s just… a viper. Speaking of vipers, did you see Liam Blackwood today? He was practically glued to Tiffany’s side for most of breakfast. Looked like he was trying to impress her.”
