The silence of the mansion was a suffocating blanket, heavier than the humid summer air. Outside, the cicadas droned their monotonous song, a stark contrast to the frantic beat of my own heart. Marco was a ghost in the periphery, a shadow that never quite faded, always present but never truly touching. He was supposed to be my guardian, a gilded cage built by my father's decree. But cages, no matter how opulent, were still cages, and I was a bird with wings that itched to fly, even if it meant crashing and burning.

Tonight, however, the air felt different. A storm had been brewing all day, not in the sky, but within the confines of these walls. A restless energy had settled over me, a gnawing dissatisfaction that no amount of pacing or staring out the manicured gardens could quell. I found myself in the library, the scent of old paper and leather a familiar comfort, though even it felt stifling tonight. Marco was in the adjoining study, the low murmur of his voice on the phone a constant, irritating reminder of his vigilance.
