The air in the villa still hummed with the ghosts of our stolen nights, a phantom heat that clung to the silk sheets and the scent of Marco’s cologne. Sunlight, once a welcome harbinger of a new day, now felt like an accusing eye, illuminating the delicate dance we performed. Marco was beside me, his arm a solid, comforting weight around my waist, yet his gaze was always outward, scanning the manicured gardens, the shadowed colonnades, the periphery of our gilded cage.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” I murmured, tracing the scar that ran subtly along his jawline, a permanent reminder of a life I was only just beginning to understand.
He shifted, pulling me closer, his lips brushing my temple. “It’s my job, Bella. My promise.” His voice was a low rumble, a constant undercurrent of conflict. He meant his promise to my father, the unbreakable vow that had, until I shattered it, defined his existence.
