The city outside was a canvas of bruised twilight, streaked with the last vestiges of defiance against the encroaching night. Inside, the air in the penthouse apartment was thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of expensive perfume that clung to Isabella like a second skin. Marco stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his silhouette a stark, imposing figure against the indifferent glow of distant streetlights. He was a statue carved from granite, his usual calm façade now a brittle shell threatening to crack. I watched him, my heart a frantic bird caught in my ribs, tracing the rigid line of his shoulders, the set of his jaw. This was a new kind of tension, different from the simmering desire that had become our constant companion. This was fear, sharp and cold, seeping in from the periphery.

"They're making a move," Marco’s voice was low, a rumble that vibrated through the glass. He didn't turn, his gaze fixed on something far beyond the glittering cityscape. "Vito's enemies. They sense an opening."

An opening. The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. My father’s absence, a void I had so desperately sought to fill with my own brand of chaos, now seemed to have invited a storm. The thrill of rebellion, the heady rush of defying boundaries, had been my sole focus. Now, a different kind of danger, one that threatened not just me, but Marco too, was knocking at our door.
