The air in the safe house hung thick with the scent of stale cigarettes and desperation. Outside, the city lights blurred into an indifferent smear, a stark contrast to the suffocating darkness that had descended upon us. Marco’s hand, usually so steady, trembled as he traced the condensation on his whiskey glass. His eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, were fixed on the flickering television screen, though I knew he wasn’t seeing the news report about a distant cartel dispute. He was seeing the abyss that had opened between us, a chasm carved by our own recklessness.

“We can’t stay here, Isabella,” he murmured, his voice raspy, a sound I’d come to cherish, a sound that was now laced with a fear I’d never heard before.

I watched him, my heart a leaden weight in my chest. This wasn’t the defiant, impulsive Bella who had thrown caution to the wind. This was a Bella grappling with the terrifying reality of our situation. The thrill of our stolen moments, the intoxicating rush of transgression, had evaporated, leaving behind the bitter taste of consequence.
