The air in the study was thick enough to choke on, a suffocating blend of cigar smoke, expensive leather, and something far more volatile: Vito Moretti’s rage. It simmered, a low, dangerous hum beneath his controlled façade, the kind that promised a swift and brutal eruption. He stood by the grand mahogany desk, his shadow stretching long and distorted across the Persian rug, a predatory silhouette against the dim lamplight. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were hard chips of obsidian, fixed on me with an intensity that felt like a physical blow.

“You,” he began, his voice a gravelly whisper that scraped against my nerves, “have disgraced this family.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Beside me, Marco stood unmoving, a statue carved from granite, his jaw tight, his gaze fixed on some unseen point beyond his father’s shoulder. He hadn’t spoken a word since Vito had stormed into the house, the unspoken accusation hanging heavy between them.
