A Test of Oaths

The air in the study was thick, not with cigar smoke as it usually was during my father’s presence, but with a tension so palpable it felt like a physical weight pressing down on my chest. Marco stood between me and my father, a silent, immovable barrier. His usual calm, the almost serene control that had always been his hallmark, was gone, replaced by a storm brewing behind his eyes. Each subtle shift of his weight, the tightening of his jaw, spoke volumes of the war raging within him. He, Marco Rossi, the man who had been my father’s shadow, his right hand, his most trusted confidant for as long as I could remember, was now the fulcrum upon which my fate, and his, teetered.

My father, Vito Moretti, stood on the other side of the room, a figure of imposing stillness. His dark eyes, usually sharp and assessing, held a different kind of fire now – a cold, simmering fury that promised devastation. He had returned unexpectedly, cutting short his “business trip” with an abruptness that had sent ripples of unease through the compound. And his first order of business, it seemed, was to confront the man who had, in his absence, dared to cross a line he himself had drawn in blood.

“Marco,” my father’s voice was low, deceptively soft, like the rumble of distant thunder before a storm. “You know what this means.”
