The Aftershock

Taye reels from the betrayal. His friends' silence cuts deeper than the affair itself, leaving him isolated in the wilderness of their journey.

The fire had crumbled to embers, a bed of tired orange that pulsed like a wounded heart. Taye sat apart from the others, his back against a gnarled oak, the rough bark digging into his spine as if the tree itself wanted to remind him he was still anchored to something solid. The night air was cool, carrying the scent of damp moss and smoke, but he felt none of it. Inside, there was only numbness, a hollow ache that had swallowed everything else.

He watched the shadows of his friends—his former friends, he corrected himself—move in the periphery of the dying light. Trinity sat close to Ryan, their shoulders almost touching, though neither spoke. Kheta leaned against a fallen log, her knees drawn to her chest, her gaze fixed on the ground. Justin poked at the embers with a stick, sending up lazy spirals of ash. Mike stood a few paces away, arms crossed, staring into the black wall of trees beyond. No one looked at Taye. No one dared.

The silence was heavy, thicker than the forest around them. It pressed down on his chest, made each breath a conscious effort. He wanted to say something, to break the tension with a question or a scream, but his throat felt locked. What was there to say now? Everything had been said. Every accusation, every tear, every trembling confession had spilled out around the campfire an hour ago, and now they were left with this—a stillness that felt like the calm after a storm, except the storm was still inside him, raging.
