Chapter 6
Confrontation at the Campfire
Taye confronts Trinity and Ryan about his suspicions. The truth of the two-year affair spills out, shattering the night's calm.
The fire crackled and spat, sending sparks spiraling into the vast, star-scattered sky. The six of them sat in a loose circle, the flames casting long, dancing shadows across their faces. Taye watched the embers drift upward, his mind far from the warmth of the campfire. His hands were clasped loosely in front of him, fingers interlaced, but his knuckles were white. The silence had stretched too long, a fragile skin over something raw and festering.
Trinity leaned against Ryan’s shoulder, her eyes half-closed, a faint smile playing on her lips. Ryan had his arm draped around her, his thumb tracing lazy circles on her arm. Justin was poking the fire with a stick, sending up a shower of orange sparks. Kheta sat cross-legged, her gaze fixed on the flames, her expression unreadable. Mike was a few feet back, leaning against a fallen log, his arms crossed, his eyes moving from face to face.
Taye’s throat was dry. He had rehearsed this moment a dozen times in his head, but now the words felt like stones in his mouth. He watched the two of them—the way Trinity’s fingers curled into Ryan’s sleeve, the way Ryan’s hand rested on her hip as if it belonged there. A cold certainty settled in his chest. He had seen the texts, the late-night calls, the way they whispered when they thought no one was listening. The evidence was scattered like breadcrumbs, and he had followed them to this bitter end.
