The morning light crept through the thin curtains of the rented cabin, casting pale streaks across the wooden floor. Taye sat on the edge of the bed, his phone warm in his hand, the screen glowing with a notification he had nearly missed. It was a voicemail—one he had never listened to, buried beneath weeks of messages from his mother, from work, from the endless noise of everyday life. The sender was unknown, the timestamp two years old.

He pressed play, holding the phone to his ear.

A woman’s voice, low and careful, spoke in fragments. “...I know this isn’t right. But I can’t stop. He says he’ll leave her, but he’s been saying that for months. I’m sorry, I just needed someone to know...”
