The morning light crept through the trees like a reluctant guest, pale and thin, casting long shadows across the camp. The fire had died hours ago, leaving only a bed of gray ash and the faint smell of smoke that clung to the air. Taye sat apart from the others, his back against a gnarled oak, staring at nothing. Christine had stayed with them, her presence a quiet balm, but even she felt the weight of the silence that hung over the group like a shroud.
Ryan sat on a fallen log, his hands clasped between his knees, his gaze fixed on the ground. He hadn’t slept. The guilt gnawed at him, a persistent ache that no amount of self-justification could soothe. He had seen the look in Taye’s eyes the night before—the hollowed-out disbelief, the slow dawning of a truth that cut deeper than any blade. And now, in the harsh light of day, the reality of what he had done pressed against his chest like a vice.
Trinity sat near the remnants of the fire, her arms wrapped around her knees, her face a mask of forced indifference. She watched Christine with a cold, simmering anger that she couldn’t quite hide. Every time Christine spoke, every time she moved closer to Taye, Trinity’s jaw tightened.
