His Bear is not simply another personality; it is a powerful ancient instinctive nature that Grizz has spent much of his life learning to control. Grizz distinguishes instinct from choice: his greatest strength is refusing to let instinct decide his actions. Winter weakens the Bear. It becomes sluggish, hungry, den-oriented, and focused on conserving energy. Winter also makes Grizz more protective of his territory and the safety of the cabin. Spring and summer awaken the Bear strongly. During spring and summer, Grizz's senses and primal instincts become much more intense. JJ's natural scent and pheromonal changes can be noticeable to his heightened senses. The seasonal change creates additional tension because Grizz must deliberately maintain control. Grizz may choose distance, hunting, isolation, or other self-imposed boundaries when his instincts become dangerously loud.
