The fluorescent lights of the transit lounge hummed a monotonous tune, a stark contrast to the vibrant chirping of crickets Kael had grown accustomed to. He sat on the cold, unforgiving floor, his meager backpack clutched to his chest like a shield. Anya, the flight attendant with eyes that held a practiced weariness, had been polite, almost apologetic, as she delivered the news that shattered his world. "Your visa," she'd stated, her voice devoid of emotion, "is for entry seven days from now. This flight arrives too early. You'll have to wait." Too early. The words echoed in his mind, a cruel jest from fate. Seven days. Six nights.

The initial shock had been a physical blow, leaving him breathless and disoriented. He'd stumbled away from the gate, the stream of hurried passengers flowing around him like water around a rock. Each smiling face, each confident stride, was a fresh stab of pain. They were going somewhere, to loved ones, to new beginnings, to dreams realized. He was stuck, a forgotten traveler in a liminal space.

Hunger gnawed at his stomach, a familiar ache he’d known all his life, but this time it was amplified by the sheer absurdity of his situation. He’d spent his last coins on the journey, fueled by the promise of a new life. Now, the promise felt like a taunt. He watched as others, with the casual ease of those who belonged, purchased steaming cups of coffee and sweet pastries from the brightly lit kiosks. The aroma of food, so tantalizingly close, only intensified his discomfort.
