Chapter 4
More Than Just Pie
Elara finds her focus shifting from the contest to Liam's easy smile and thoughtful gestures. Liam, too, questions the prize, finding himself drawn to Elara's warmth, wondering if winning her heart is the real prize.
The air in Elara’s kitchen, usually thick with the comforting scent of baking apples and cinnamon, now held a faint, persistent tang of… something else. Something vaguely tangy, like forgotten yogurt. She’d spent the better part of the morning scrubbing her prize-winning pie plate with an industrial-strength degreaser, convinced a phantom film of Liam’s sourdough starter was clinging to it like a particularly stubborn ex. It wasn’t. It was just her imagination, working overtime.
She leaned against the counter, sighing. The blueberry pie, her ticket to pie-baking glory, sat cooling on the rack, looking innocent enough. But a shadow of doubt, as dark and unsettling as an underbaked crust, had settled over her. The incident with Liam’s starter, a rogue blob of yeasty ambition that had somehow found its way into her meticulously crafted blueberry filling, had been… surprisingly manageable. Liam, for all his infuriatingly perfect hair and smug pronouncements about fermentation, had been remarkably contrite. He’d even brought over a meticulously labeled jar of his own blueberry jam, “a peace offering, and perhaps a palate cleanser,” he’d said with a grin that made her stomach do a weird little flip.
They’d spent the afternoon in a tense, flour-dusted truce, meticulously de-sourdough-ing the pie. It had been a bizarre dance of shared spatulas and whispered apologies. Elara, usually a solitary baker, found herself… not entirely hating the company. Liam’s hands, surprisingly gentle for someone who wielded a whisk like a weapon, moved with an almost artistic grace as he helped her scoop out the offending starter. He’d hummed along to a song on the radio, a terrible, synth-heavy ballad from the 80s that Elara secretly adored. When he’d caught her tapping her foot, he’d grinned. “You know this one?” he’d asked, his voice laced with a playful challenge.
