The air in the apartment had grown thick, heavy with an unspoken tension that had been slowly suffocating the vibrant life they’d cultivated together. It clung to the furniture, seeped into the very walls, turning their sanctuary into a cage. Krystal stood by the window, her reflection a pale stranger against the darkening sky, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on the cool glass. The silence stretching between her and Aj was a chasm, a vast, echoing emptiness that mirrored the one that had always resided within her.

“Aj,” she began, her voice a fragile thread, “we need to talk.”

He was in the kitchen, ostensibly cleaning a mug, but his movements were stiff, mechanical. He didn’t turn around. “About what, Krys?” His response was too casual, a thin veneer over something coiled and tight.
