Echoes of Betrayal
The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast a warm, intimate circle around them. Krystal’s laughter, a sound Aj had always found intoxicating, still echoed in the quiet of the room. They’d been talking, reminiscing about a silly argument they’d had in college over a borrowed sweater, a story that always ended with them dissolving into giggles. Aj watched her, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled, the unconscious way she brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear. It was these small, unstudied gestures that had woven themselves into the fabric of his affection, transforming their decades-long friendship into something far more potent, far more precious.
“Remember that time you swore you’d lost it,” Krystal said, her voice a husky whisper, “and it was tucked away in your laundry hamper the whole time?”
Aj chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. “I was convinced you’d pawned it for textbook money.”
