Building Bridges
The silence that had settled between them after the storm of confessions was not the deafening, suffocating kind, but rather a hushed reverence, like the moments after a great quake when the earth stills, waiting to see if it will crumble further or begin to mend. AJ and Krystal sat across from each other, not with the comfortable ease of old friends, but with the fragile awareness of two people who had just laid bare the deepest scars they carried. The air, once thick with unspoken anxieties, now felt thinner, allowing for the tentative breath of a new beginning.
AJ watched Krystal, his gaze a careful study. He saw the lingering vulnerability in her eyes, the slight tremor in her hands as she clasped them in her lap. His own instinct was to retreat, to build the walls back up, to protect himself from the raw exposure. But the memory of her tears, the depth of her pain when she spoke of abandonment, held him tethered. He had to try. He *would* try.
“Krystal,” he began, his voice softer than usual, a deliberate choice to soften the edges of his own buried fear. He felt the familiar tightening in his chest, the phantom ache of betrayal whispering its insidious lies. But this time, he didn’t let it consume him. He focused on her, on the present. “I… I’m still processing a lot of this. And the thought of… of things falling apart again, it’s… it’s a strong feeling.” He paused, searching her face for understanding, for anything other than the fear he projected. “I’m trying not to let it take over, but I wanted you to know. So I don’t… so I don’t shut down on you.”
