The biting wind whipped at Azuron’s worn cloak, a familiar companion on these lonely mountain paths. Each gust seemed to carry the ghosts of his father’s bellows, the clang of his hammer, the comforting scent of coal smoke and sweat. He clutched the heavy steel in his hand, the familiar weight of his father’s hammer a grounding force against the gnawing uncertainty that still lurked in the shadowed corners of his mind. Copper rank. It felt like a flimsy label, a fragile shield against the vast, unforgiving wilderness. He was a novice, a boy playing at being a man, armed with a blacksmith’s tool and a desperate hope to honor a memory.

The mission had started simply enough: clear a goblin nest that had been plaguing the trade route a few leagues west of Stonehelm. Routine. Predictable. The kind of task a copper rank could handle, a stepping stone towards the silver and gold ranks that shimmered like distant stars in his ambitions. But the goblins were just the surface, a fever symptom of a deeper, more insidious sickness infecting the land. He’d found the ritualistic markings, the unnatural stillness in the air, the chilling whispers that weren’t just the wind. He’d seen the crude, yet disturbingly effective, traps that spoke of planning, of something far beyond the usual goblinoid scavenging.

Fear, cold and sharp, had pricked at him then, a sensation he hadn’t felt since leaving the smoldering ruins of his village. He’d seen the grim faces of the Stonehelm guards, their weary eyes reflecting a similar unease. They spoke of missing patrols, of livestock vanishing without a trace, of a growing darkness pressing in from the untamed peaks. Azuron, with his father’s hammer and the naive courage of youth, had stumbled upon a truth that threatened to swallow him whole. He was outmatched, outgunned, a single spark against a gathering storm.
