The world, once a tapestry woven with the bright threads of faith, began to fray. Elara was no longer a child, her hands no longer small enough to trace the smooth, worn beads of the wooden necklace with innocent wonder. Life, she was learning, was not always a gentle stream, but could be a raging river, capable of pulling even the strongest swimmer under. The shadows that had begun to creep into the edges of her belief in the previous chapter now lengthened, swallowing the light.

They hold the strength of all those who came before you. They will guide you.” But where was the guidance now? Where was the strength? All she felt was a hollow ache, a gnawing emptiness where her faith used to reside.
