Anya’s friend, Lena, sat hunched on the worn wooden bench by the river, her small shoulders shaking with silent sobs. The sun, usually a cheerful splash of gold on the water, seemed muted today, casting long, mournful shadows. Anya’s heart ached for her. Lena’s beloved cat, Whiskers, had disappeared two days ago, and the village was no closer to finding him. Anya had searched every barn, peered into every bush, and called his name until her voice was hoarse, but there was no sign. Now, seeing Lena’s despair, Anya felt a familiar helplessness creep in. Anya didn’t fully understand the prayers, but she understood the peace they seemed to bring. She looked at Lena, her face streaked with tears, and an idea, small and tentative, bloomed in her mind.

“Lena?” Anya’s voice was soft, barely disturbing the quiet hum of the river. Lena didn’t look up, just drew her knees tighter to her chest. Anya hesitated for a moment, then, with a deep breath, she unclasped her necklace. The smooth wood felt cool in her palm. She held it out to Lena.
