Anya traced the smooth, cool curve of a bead with her fingertip, the familiar grain of the wood a comfort against her skin. The necklace, usually so warm from being worn, felt strangely distant today, as if holding its breath. Grandmother Elara’s room, once filled with the gentle clatter of knitting needles and the scent of lavender, now held a hushed stillness, broken only by the shallow rhythm of her breathing. Anya missed the stories, the way her grandmother’s eyes would sparkle when she spoke of faraway lands and ancient times. Now, those eyes were often closed, her hand resting on the worn blanket, the wooden necklace coiled loosely around her frail wrist.

Anya had tried to talk to her grandmother about the necklace, about the whispers she’d overheard from the village women – hushed words of memories held within the wood, of faith that pulsed like a hidden heartbeat. But Elara would only smile, a soft, knowing smile, and pat Anya’s hand. “It is a gift, little one,” she’d say, her voice thin as a spider’s silk. “A gift that remembers.”

Remembering. Anya understood remembering lost toys or forgotten birthdays. But remembering faith? Remembering peace? It felt like trying to catch smoke. The necklace was beautiful, yes, with its dark, polished beads, each one unique, like tiny, silent faces. But it was more than just beautiful. It was important. She knew it in the way her heart felt a peculiar tug whenever she held it, a sense of something vast and ancient just beyond her grasp.
