Chapter 4
Secrets in the Wood
While examining the necklace, Anya discovers a tiny, hidden compartment or a faint inscription etched into one of the beads, hinting at a deeper, untold story.
Anya traced the smooth, cool surface of the wooden beads with a fingertip. The necklace lay on her palm, a familiar weight, yet today it felt different. Grandmother Elara was weaker, her breaths shallow sighs that barely stirred the worn quilt on her bed. The hushed whispers of the village women, their faces etched with worry, seemed to echo the quiet ache in Anya’s own chest. She’d been told to stay close, to be brave, but bravery felt like a distant shore.
She remembered the day Elara had placed the necklace around her neck. “This is not just wood, little one,” she’d said, her eyes, usually so bright, clouded with a gentle weariness. “It is a story. It is faith. It is memory.” Anya, then only seven, had been more fascinated by the intricate carving on the largest bead, a swirling pattern that seemed to shift and reform as she turned it. Now, the swirling pattern held a new kind of mystery, one tied to the fading light in her grandmother’s eyes.
The room was dim, lit only by a single flickering candle that cast dancing shadows on the walls. Anya sat by the window, the necklace a cool anchor against her skin. She’d been fiddling with it, a nervous habit, when her thumb brushed against a bead that felt… wrong. It wasn’t perfectly round like the others. It had a slight ridge, almost imperceptible. Curiosity, a familiar spark in Anya’s young heart, flared. She held the bead closer to the candlelight, turning it slowly.
