Chapter 6
Reign of the Dragon Heart
Lyra embraces her destiny. Summoning dragons, she battles Malakor. Her full power unleashed, she vanquishes the evil, becoming the protector of a world where dragons reign.
The air thrummed, not with the usual gentle breeze that rustled the eaves of our thatched cottages, but with a deep, resonant vibration that settled in my bones. It felt like the earth itself was sighing, a sound that had become increasingly familiar, yet no less unsettling. Elder Maeve’s words, delivered in hushed tones in the dim light of her cottage, echoed in my mind: "The old blood stirs, Lyra. The threads of fate are being woven anew." I’d dismissed them as the ramblings of an elder, her mind perhaps clouded by age and the growing fear that gripped our village. But now, standing on the edge of the whispering woods, the vibration pulsed through me, a physical manifestation of the unease that had been a constant companion for weeks. It was more than just a feeling; it was a presence, a vast, ancient power stirring from a slumber I hadn't known existed.
The sky, usually a canvas of soft blues and greys, was bruised with an unnatural twilight, even though the sun had barely begun its descent. A gust of wind, sharp and cold, whipped around me, tugging at my homespun tunic, and carrying with it a scent I couldn’t quite place – something primal, like ozone and ancient stone, mixed with the faintest hint of smoke. It was the same scent that had accompanied the distant roars, the ones that had sent the livestock into a panicked frenzy and hushed the evening chatter of the villagers. I’d always felt a strange pull towards these occurrences, a disquieting familiarity that tightened my chest. It was as if a hidden part of me recognized the wildness, the untamed power, and yearned for it, even as another part recoiled in fear.
Then, a shadow fell across the clearing. It wasn't the gentle lengthening of evening shadows, but a sharp, abrupt eclipse of the already dim light. The vibration in the earth intensified, and a low growl, deeper than any thunder I had ever heard, rumbled through the air. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. I squeezed my eyes shut, a futile attempt to shut out the rising terror, but the sound seemed to penetrate my very skull. When I dared to open them, he stood at the edge of the woods, a figure cloaked in darkness, his presence a palpable miasma of malice. He was the one they called Malakor, the harbinger of the recent terror. He had spoken of an ancient power, of its necessity to be controlled, of its potential to reshape the world. Whispers, once dismissed as fanciful tales for children, now spoke of dragons, of creatures of myth and legend.
