The air in the hidden grotto was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and wild that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. Elder Maeve’s voice, usually a gentle murmur like a flowing stream, held a new resonance, a gravity that pressed down on me. “You ask why the winds howl around you, child,” she began, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, fixed on mine. “Why the earth trembles when your heart aches, or why a distant roar echoes in your soul when danger nears. It is not mere coincidence, Lyra. It is the call of your blood.”
My blood. The words felt alien, foreign, yet they resonated with a truth I had instinctively known, a truth I had buried deep beneath layers of denial and fear. The unexplained gusts that had tugged at my skirts on clear days, the low, guttural rumblings that had vibrated through the soles of my worn boots, the unsettling feeling of being watched by something vast and unseen – it wasn’t just my imagination. It was a connection, a whisper from a world I never knew existed, a world that was now reaching out.
Maeve gestured to a crumbling stone tablet, its surface etched with symbols that seemed to writhe in the dim light. “For generations, our kind has guarded the knowledge of the Dragon Riders. A lineage of power, of harmony, of a bond so profound it could shape the very air we breathe. But the riders, they faded. Their magic, dormant. Until now.”
