The air in Oakhaven had always been a gentle, predictable thing, like a well-worn blanket. But lately, something else was starting to weave itself into the familiar breezes that rustled through Mrs. Gable’s prize-winning petunias and tickled the noses of the children playing hopscotch on Elm Street. It was a whisper, a shimmer, a hint of something altogether new and wonderfully strange, emanating from Elara’s small cottage at the edge of town.
Her garden, once a quiet sanctuary of muted greens and soft blues, had transformed. The seeds, gifted by the mysterious Gardener’s Echo, had unfurled not just into plants, but into a living tapestry of hues that defied description. Petals pulsed with iridescent light, shifting from the deep indigo of a twilight sky to the fiery blush of a sunrise, all within the space of a single breath. Leaves unfurled in patterns that seemed to hum with silent music, and the very air around the blooms felt thick with an unseen energy, like the moment before a summer storm.
It started subtly. Old Mr. Henderson, who walked his terrier, Buster, past Elara’s fence every morning, paused one Tuesday, his brow furrowed. “Elara,” he called out, his voice raspy with age and surprise, “your roses… they’re positively glowing this morning. Are you using some new kind of fertilizer?”
