The air in the studio was thick with unspoken words, a fragile tension that vibrated between us like a plucked string. Outside, Los Angeles hummed its indifferent tune, but within these four walls, time had warped, folding back on itself until the yesterday I’d desperately tried to outrun stood breathing beside me. Ethan. His name, once a melody etched into my soul, now felt like a dissonant chord, beautiful yet painful.

We sat on opposite sides of the worn, paint-splattered sofa, a chasm of five years and a thousand regrets stretching between us. Chloe had wisely excused herself, leaving us to navigate this treacherous terrain alone. The scent of turpentine and linseed oil, once my sanctuary, now seemed to amplify the ache in my chest. It was the smell of our shared past, of late nights spent sketching dreams onto paper, of a love that had burned so brightly it had consumed us both.

“Mia,” Ethan began, his voice a low rumble, hesitant, like a hesitant brushstroke. He looked different, older, the boyish eagerness in his eyes tempered by a weariness I recognized. The lines around them spoke of sleepless nights, of battles fought and lost, or perhaps, still being fought. “I… I don’t know what to say.”
