The air in the gallery, usually a sanctuary of hushed reverence and whispered admiration, now felt thick with an unspoken tension, a static charge that prickled my skin. It had been a week since the crisis, the one that had thrown Ethan and me together in a way neither of us had anticipated, a week of tentative conversations and shared glances that held more weight than entire speeches. We were navigating a landscape fraught with the debris of our past, each step careful, each word measured, as if a single misstep could send the whole fragile structure tumbling down.
Chloe had been a constant, a steady lighthouse in the fog of my confusion. She’d seen the flicker of something rekindled in my eyes, the hesitant smiles that dared to bloom when Ethan was near. “He’s still here, Mia,” she’d said, her voice soft but firm, as we’d stood by the window of my temporary L.A. apartment, watching the city lights bleed into the twilight. “The man you loved. He’s still here. You just have to decide if you’re ready to see him.”
But seeing him, and trusting him, were two vastly different things. The echoes of our past, the reasons I had walked away, were not easily silenced. They were the shadows that clung to the edges of my vision, whispering doubts, reminding me of the pain that had carved itself so deeply into my soul.
